The diminutive for Jan in Old Dutch would be Jantje pronounced Yankee. An alternative theory is that Yankee is a conflation of the Dutch names Jan and Kees, where Kees is short for Cornelius, another very popular Dutch name. There is also some evidence that British sailors used to refer to Dutch sailors as Yankees.&The term Yankee is attested as early as 1683. 9 It likely derives from the Dutch name Janke (lit. 'Little John'), which was popular across New Netherland during the 17th century. 8915 The Oxford English Dictionary calls this theory "perhaps the most plausible". 16 Janke was used as both a diminutive form of the Dutch name Jan (Dutch: jɑn) and as a surname in its own right. 817.Its Anglicized spelling Yankee could, in this way, have been used to mock Dutch colonists. The chosen name Jan Kees may have been partly inspired by a dialectal rendition of Jan Kaas ("John Cheese"), the generic nickname that Southern Dutch used for Dutch people living in the North. 14.The term Yankee and its contracted form Yank have several interrelated meanings, all referring to people from the United States. Their various meanings depend on the context, and may refer to New Englanders, the Northeastern United States, the Northern United States, or to people from the US in general. Many of the earlier immigrants to the northeast from Ireland, Italy, Poland, and other regions of Europe used Yankees to refer to English settlers in New England. Outside the United States, Yank is used informally to refer to a person or thing from the US. It has been especially popular in the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand where it may be used variously, either with an uncomplimentary overtone, endearingly, or cordially. In the Southern United States, Yankee is a derisive term which refers to all Northerners, and during the American Civil War it was applied by Confederates to soldiers of the Union army in general.!Ben Zimmer traces the word 'Yanks' back to the days when the British wanted to disrespect Dutch settlers.&Somebody else explained: "Yankee was originally a derogatory term used by the Dutch against English settlers. And the English settlers against the colonists.`Yankee Dutch can refer to a number of hybrid English-Dutch varieties. I'm particularly interested in the Midwestern variety at the beginning of the 20th century. One form, Grand Rapids Yankee
